About it all
Aloha, my name is Lyon Kaumaka Ming Hoi Tang. I am from Waimānalo on the Island of Oʻahu, HI, and this is what Kaumaka is about.
Kaumaka truly started the day I was born and given the name Kaumaka by my parents. To my parents the name translates to “the apple of my eye”, but like most words in the Hawaiian language, Kaumaka has many meanings. A few examples of those meanings are the beloved one, one's view, one's perspective, and favorite. As a child I gave little thought to my name, but as I grew I began to understand the importance of it. I have come to love my name so much that it is now also the name of this brand. That is how I landed on the name of the brand, but it truly came to life when I put pen to paper. Drawing has always been a hobby of mine and my creations are usually inspired by the outdoors and all that it has to offer. Some of my favorite forms of art are Gyotaku and pattern prints. When I lay “pen to paper” I usually try to combine my imagination with things, animals, or events I have witnessed in real life to create a unique image and story. Trying to build a business while also being a full time student, brother, athlete, and always wanting to be outdoors has been difficult but with the help from my family and friends I have been able to create a few products I am extremely proud of and that I hope to build upon.
